Gordon James Ramsay (born 8 November 1966) is a British celebrity chef, restaurateur, television presenter, and writer. But he is perhaps best known in the early 21st century for the profanity and fiery temper that he freely displayed on television cooking programs.
Gordon James Ramsay was born in Johnstone, Scotland, on 8 November 1966, the son of Helen (née Cosgrove), a nurse, and Gordon James Sr., who worked as a swimming pool manager, welder, and shopkeeper. He has three sibling, one brother and two sisters. When he was nine years old, he moved with his family to England and grew up in the Bishopton area of Stratford-upon-Avon.He has described his early life as "hopelessly itinerant" and said his family moved constantly owing to the aspirations and failures of his father, who was an occasionally violent alcoholic; Ramsay described him as a "hard-drinking womaniser".In his autobiography, he revealed that his father abused and neglected the children and his mother. He worked as a pot washer in a local Indian restaurant where his sister was a waitress. He had hoped to become a footballer and was first chosen to play under-14 football at the age of 12, but his early footballing career was marked by injuries; after a serious knee injury, he was forced to give it up.At the age of 16, he moved out of the family home and into an apartment in Banbury.
He ended up going to college for hotel management after a nasty knee injury ruined his dreams of a football career. After earning a vocational diploma in hotel management from North Oxon Technical College in 1987, he moved to London and began honing his culinary skills under chef Marco Pierre White at the restaurant Harvey’s and under chef Albert Roux at La Gavroche. During the early 1990s Ramsay traveled to France, where he prepared classic French cuisine in the kitchens of master chefs Joël Robuchon and Guy Savoy. In 1993 Ramsay returned to London and became head chef of Aubergine, which by 1996 had won two of a maximum of three stars from the Michelin Guide, a highly regarded hotel- and restaurant-ranking publication.
Gordon married Tana Ramsay (née Hutcheson) in 1996 and the pair became first-time parents in 1998 after welcoming their eldest daughter, Megan Ramsay, 26. Their brood grew to a family of six with the birth of fraternal twins, daughter Holly Anna Ramsay and son Jack Scott Ramsay, 24, in 1999; Matilda Ramsay, 23, who affectionately goes by Tilly, in 2001; son Oscar James Ramsay, 5, in 2019 (after experiencing a miscarriage in 2016); and son Jesse James in 2023.
The birth of the couple's youngest son, Jesse, was a surprise to fans of the Ramsay family, who kept Tana's pregnancy completely under wraps. "It’s been a nerve-wracking 9 months but we’ve made it and we have been blessed with this little bundle," the mom of six wrote on Instagram. "Ramsay family definitely complete." Now, Ramsay splits his time between Los Angeles and South London, where he resides with his wife, Tana and six children, along with their dogs, cats and tortoise "Try it Yourself" link.
